If you keep up with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram you know that lately we have been focused on style. With that in mind, it’s time to highlight one of our favorite eyewear brands at Gregor Eye Care: Vera Bradley.

Vera Bradley Gregor Eye Care

History

There is much more to Vera Bradley than eyewear. Originally known for their iconic luggage and bags, Vera Bradley has expanded their line to include accessories such as scarves, wallets, phone cases, perfumes, cosmetic cases, and of course frames. What’s New at Gregor in 2016?

Lafont EyewearWe’re nearly a week into 2016 and so far things appear to be looking great here in Overland Park (go Chiefs)! However, for those of you struggling with vision loss or an out-of-date prescription, you might not be seeing the New Year the way you ought to be.

At Gregor Eye Care, we see things differently! Here are 5 reasons you should consider visiting soon to make sure you don’t miss a thing this year.

  1. New eye care technology
Last year was a big year for new technology at Gregor. We’re delighted to now offer patients even better eye screenings using our new Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Icare tonometer… Don’t all jump out of your seats at once!

In layman’s terms, our new eye screening technology means that our patients will continue to have the latest and greatest in eye care, as we are able to detect and treat eye changes, vision loss, ocular and neurological disorders, Glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and cataracts faster than ever.

  1. The latest fashion eyewear
Oakley, Lafont, Robert Graham, Ted Baker, Ann Taylor, etc. Whether you’re searching for a new everyday frame or a set of winter shades, we have you covered with the season’s latest styles from the greatest designers .
  1. High-tech lenses
We understand that everyone has a different lifestyle and different eyes. That’s why we know everyone needs different lenses. Sit at a computer all day staring at blue light? We have you covered. Spend your nights driving, and can’t stand the glare? No problem. Have a very strong prescription, but don’t want that “bugged eye look”? We know exactly how you feel! Visit our website here to check out more of the lens options we offer.
  1. Bruder Mask
Bruder MaskIn 2016 you will definitely see everyone here at Gregor embracing a more holistic approach to eye care by combining natural remedies with our already effective treatments. That’s where the Bruder Mask comes in. Activated by simply placing it in the microwave for a short time, Bruder moist heat masks are a natural, proven way of bringing relief to dry eyes and styes, replenish moisture, reduce inflammation, improve your natural oil gland production, and treat many other types of eye irritations.
  1. Vitamins
Another natural form of eye care we’re embracing in 2016 is the use of eye health promoting vitamins. Eye health shouldn’t just be about detecting vision problems, it should also be about preventing vision problems, and vitamins are a fantastic way to help do so.

Overall, 2016 is sure to bring plenty of ups and downs, and we hope you’re able to enjoy the ride with great vision. Protect Your Eyes From Blue Light

BlutechDid you know? 55% of adults spend up to five hours a day using a computer or handheld device? For those of us who work at a computer for a living, the hours can add up to even more.

Unfortunately, this high amount of screen time is having an impact on our eyes. Not only can staring at a screen cause serious dry eye, it can also lead to sleep problems. In addition, the blue light emanating from your computer, smart phone, tablet and television can also lead to macular degeneration over time, the leading cause of visual impairment in the world.

How can you protect your vision? We have a few suggestions.

  1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule.
Every twenty minutes take a break from your devices and look at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps reduce dry eye and acts as much needed break from blue light.
  2. Don’t bring your smart phone to bed.
Before bed, make sure you give your eyes some down time. Using your devices right up until you fall asleep is not only bad for your vision, it can also cause restless sleep.
  3. Use Blutech lenses.
Blutech lenses protect your vision from the harmful rays emitted from blue light, both from the sun, florescent lights and your favorite devices. In addition, they also help improve your color perception, contrast and night vision.

You only have one pair of eyes. Make sure you take care of them!

November is American Diabetes Month

November is American Diabetes Month. Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to regulate its sugar levels because its insulin output isn’t working properly. Many Americans believe the only thing to be concerned about with diabetes is eating a healthy diet and monitoring blood sugar levels. However, there are many other health factors that this disease can impact, including your vision.Diabetic Retinopathy

In fact, in addition to being at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy which can leave you severely visually impaired or blind, people with diabetes are 40% more likely to develop Glaucoma and 60% more likely to acquire cataracts. Luckily, diabetes and diseases caused by it can be dedicated early on to help save your vision.

If you have a family history of diabetes, or have been diagnosed with the disease, a yearly-dilated eye exam or retinal scan is crucial to maintaining good eye health. Controlling your blood sugar combined with yearly eye exams has proven to help slow, or possibly prevent, the onset of diabetic eye disease.

Want to have your eyes checked? Schedule an appointment with Dr. Gregor today.

Cataracts 101

What is a cataract?
A cataract is an eye disease that clouds the lens of the eye, causing significant blurred vision that glasses cannot correct. It develops when the proteins in the lens that allows light to pass through it begin to clump together, causing a cloudy spot.

cataract-example

What causes a cataract?
There are 5 main types of cataracts:

  1. Age related – Most cataracts are related to aging, and are quite common in older adults. In fact, over half of Americans have a cataract or have had cataract surgery by the time they reach 80-years-old.
  2. Secondary – Cataracts can sometimes form as a result of other diseases like diabetes, or from eye related surgeries.
  3. Traumatic – Cataracts can develop after traumatic eye injuries. These often don’t appear until years later.
  4. Congenital – Unfortunately, sometimes babies are born with cataracts or develop them as young children. However, often these are so small that they don’t affect a child’s vision.
  5. Radiation – Exposure to certain types of radiation can cause cataracts.

How can I prevent cataracts?
Cataracts are most common in older adults, and can be difficult to prevent. However, there are a few things you can do:

  1. Eat a healthy diet and limit your alcohol intake.
  2. Don’t smoke – Your lungs and heart are not the only two parts of the body smoking has a negative effect on.
  3. Wear sunglasses – Too much exposure to the sun damages your eyes and can contribute to the development of cataracts.
  4. Visit your eye doctor regularly – This will help you keep your eyes nice and healthy. Call Dr. Gregor at (913) 685-0212 to schedule an eye exam today and to talk more about how to prevent cataracts and other serious eye diseases.

Keep Your Eyes Safe And On The Ball

Have you noticed your hockey swing is a little off? Or has your son or daughter been missing the soccer ball? Speed and strength are not the only important components to performing well in sports. Good vision can actually make or break your game.

Cyclist

In fact, there is a lot more to vision than just seeing clearly. Your vision is made up of interrelated skills that can affect how you play your favorite sports. What it really comes down to is protection and precision.

Because every sport has different visual needs, when you come in for your annual eye exam, talking about the activities you participate in and the sports you play with your optometrist is essential. This way doctors like Dr. Gregor can assess your unique vision characteristics and help to fit you with the best eyewear or contacts for your sport or activity. This will not only to help maximize your performance and it will also keep you having fun. This is especially true for those of you who play high-risk sports.

Thousands of children and adults suffer sports-related eye injuries each year because they don’t wear the proper eye protection. Nearly all of these injuries can be prevented. If nothing else, when playing sports outdoors sunglasses are a must, and sport-specific designs may even help you improve your game.

Want to learn more about your vision and sports? Or would you like to browse Gregor Eye Care’s sports eyewear? Visit us today at 15100 Metcalf Ave, Suite 101, inside the Central Bank of the Midwest in Overland Park.
